Guess who made the cover of this month’s Missouri Organization of Nurse Leaders (MONL) Newsletter….
Here’s the info that accompanied Mark’s picture.
NAME: Mark David Mattes, R.N., M.S.
HOMETOWN: Mattoon, Illinois
CURRENT JOB: Assistant Administrator – Patient Care Services at Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare in Clinton, Missouri
BEING IN A LEADERSHIP POSITION ALLOWS ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO: Lead by example; educate all healthcare workers that it takes a team of staff to provide quality patient care and the ability to mentor new leaders.
FIRST JOB IN NURSING: I worked in the medical intensive care unit at Rush Presbyterian St Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago Illinois.
MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THAT I: Love the early morning with a great cup of coffee listening to music.
MY BEST ADVICE TO ASPIRING LEADERS IS TO: Be persistent yet patient – timing is critical. You need to be prepared for that “teachable moment.”
BIGGEST CHALLENGE I FACED AS A NURSE LEADER WAS: Myself… Learn-ing how to be the best nurse leader I can be.
INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT: American history
ONE WORD TO SUMMARIZE ME: Committed
Mark has had many optimistic attributes in the areas of patient safety, quality, and recruitment and retention for Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare. Mark holds nursing round tables each month where he can teach and mentor to each staff member on the needs of the organization from the nursing standpoint. Mark has also adopted a monthly “Midnight Meal” for the nursing staff on the late shifts to engage in the safety needs and concerns of the organization.
