If you think funding for Medicaid is hard to come by now…

Did you know that there is a proposal in front of the Missouri Senate suggesting that Missouri secede from the Union.  SJR 45 is a measure introduced earlier this year by Senator Brian Nieves.  The proposed constitutional amendment is titled “Prohibits Missouri state government from recognizing, enforcing, or acting in furtherance of certain actions of the federal government” and it goes on to read “Upon approval by the voters, this constitutional amendment prohibits the Missouri legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government from recognizing, enforcing, or acting in furtherance of any federal action that exceeds the powers delegated to the federal government…”.

I won’t bore you with the rest of the language and it gets a lot more pointed and controversial so I’d rather not repeat some of the language.

My point is simply this.  If you read this blog on any sort of regular basis you know that I try to keep readers informed of potential changes in reimbursement to Medicaid.  If Missouri were to break ties with the federal government, which is not legal by the way, the state would essentially be “biting the hand that feeds it”.

The State of Missouri receives a great deal more service and revenue from the federal government then it pays in taxes.  The federal match for Medicaid spending is the sole reason Medicaid works, although some providers could make a great argument that Medicaid doesn’t work!  Without federal support of Medicaid some of our most needy neighbors would not be able to acquire lifesaving health care services.

I doubt we’ll need to find a new flag for the flag pole in front of the hospital anytime soon and I personally, am proud to be an American.  God Bless America and Missouri!
