This past Wednesday, GVMH celebrated its 40th anniversary and 40th year of caring for its community. The celebration provided us an opportunity to recognize five staff and one physician who have worked at GVMH since the day it opened. You can “click” on any of the pictures below for a better view.
Those five staff are Virginia Graham, Esther Singer, Connie Austin, Karen Hill and Jerry Warren. The physician is Dr. Clouse. Here’s a picture:
The Greater Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors took part in the celebration and presented a cake and certificate to GVMH. Here’s a picture:
After the crowds left the lobby I stuck behind to thank Cynthia Brouk for all of her hard work helping to organize the celebration and while I was talking with her two women walked by and I offered them cake. One of the women asked what we were celebrating and I explained to her that today marked our 40th anniversary of caring for our community. The conversation then went in a whole different direction than I had anticipated!
The two women, Helen and Debbie McCubbin, informed me they were the first two LPN’s hired by GVMH and they worked here the day the hospital opened and for a couple years after before taking a job closer to their homes in Lincoln. The two are mother and daughter and they went through LPN training together and upon graduating from LPN training they were hired to work at the “New” hospital in Clinton.
They told me their jobs actually began about two weeks before the hospital opened and they spent most of that time at a typewriter typing policies. They also cleaned each room and put beds together in preparation for the patients who would arrive when the hospital opened.
I had a great conversation with the two of them and I was touched by their stories. They had no idea we were celebrating our anniversary they just happened to be at the hospital visiting a family member recovering from surgery. It’s funny how some things come full circle.
