I recently read a quote from General George S. Patton that applies to what I believe is appropriate management style. Here’s the quote “Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.”
I’m a firm believer that sometimes the best management is no management at all. It may be best to get out-of-the-way and let people do their jobs. I also believe that you get what you expect from people. If expectations are high and you provide the appropriate support, you get results. I you don’t expect much of people, you’ll likely get exactly what you expect – not much.
For both of these reasons it’s extremely important to hire the right person and more importantly the right type of person. The right type of person is a person with a positive attitude, a person who is willing to make a decision and a person who understands he or she will make a mistake.
We all make mistakes but mistakes provide an opportunity for learning. The only real mistake we can make is not learning from a previous mistake and making the same mistake over and over again.
