It can, at GVMH it does and our patients love it!
It wasn’t that long ago that one of the worst things about being in the hospital was the food. Worse than the needle sticks, uncomfortable beds, noisy hallways, and constant poking and prodding.
In a lot of hospitals the food might still be the worst part of the experience, not at GVMH. Our Food and Nutrition Services (FANS) Staff have worked hard over the past couple years to improve the quality of food, the hospital food experience and presentation of the food. Last October the FANS Staff implemented room service and patients can order anything on the menu any time of day just like they would in an upscale hotel. GVMH may have the most diverse and best tasting menu in Clinton.
Let me give you a few examples of what’s on the menu. For breakfast patients can order biscuits and gravy, eggs, or omelets. For lunch and supper patients can order a chicken caesar wrap, a vegetarian pizza, lemon tilapia with peach salsa, asian stir fry, or penne pasta with alfredo sauce. These are just a few of the options and I didn’t include any of the 22 desserts.
We know our patients like the food because they tell us. We participate in Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Surveys and we are able to compare our services to those in participating hospitals across the country. Since going to room service our inpatient food services have scored in the top 10% of all hospitals in the country!
It’s not unusual for a patient to send a card or small gift to one of our nursing units or patient care departments because we provide great care and patients are appreciative of the service they receive. It is unusual for a hospital food service department to get a thank you from a patient but that’s exactly what happened last week.
Our FANS Department received a bouquet of flowers from a patient this past Saturday. The card attached to the flowers said “Thank you for the excellent food service from room 239”.
I remember when hospital food was a liability but now, at GVMH, it’s an asset. Hospital food at GVMH is not only good, it’s GREAT!
Now we just need to work on that poking and prodding…
